Competition Report:  Sat 15/12 – Sun 16/12

Well done to everyone who competed last weekend.

Although this was not the first racing for the year for many of our competitors, it was a big weekend of competition for Half Moon.  Last weekend we had teams competing in Vic, Qld and NSW.  We are establishing Half Moon Bay as a competitive club at a National Level.  So far this season we have had 2 Rounds of the Ocean Thunder Boat events, a Boat carnival at Anglesea, Trent, Ham and Clare in the Gold, 2 Rounds of the Ocean Assault series in Qld, the first Senior Carnival (Sandridge) and the second Junior Carnival (Sandridge).  Add to that, a couple of weeks earlier we had Trent and Faffo in the senior State team and Natasha and Sasha in the Junior Team competing at Bondi. Not a bad string of events pre Christmas.  If there was a sandcastle building competition in South Australia, we would probably send a team to that as well.  So here are some of the highlights.

 Tugun Carnival Qld (Sat/Sun).

This was the second event of the Ocean Assault carnival series.  Again we sent our team up north for some quality racing.  It was a typical “Kurruwa” style break with some challenging surf.  Three was plenty of sunshine and sunburn. I think Waxy beat Trent in the sunburn race, although I think Trent is way ahead on season aggregate.  Particular highlights: Lisa/Clare in the female double final taking a late drop to give the girls on the winning wave a scare (they were close to holding it).  Hannah had some outstanding swims for her first surf carnival.  Apart from her individual swim and taplin swim she teamed up with Phoebe in the board rescue they turned plenty of heads, when at the cans they were well ahead of a crack field (although some work is needed on the paddle in I think).  Foxy final of Ski.  Lisa/Foxy in mixed double final, Soz/Foxy double final, Clare ski final, Trent Iron Final.  Apart from his great paddles in the U17 Board Waxy beat Jeddo in the first round of the board (Jeddo was blaming the colours of his new board).  In the Junior girls ranks Emma and Grace also had some quality races, with a particular mention to Graces outstanding paddle in the girls taplin race.  It was also great to have Shano, Soz and Buzz up and racing in some quality fields.  A special mention to Shano and his co-pilots for guiding the trailer up.  Thanks to Cliff, our interstate racing would probably just be an idea without you pushing it .  Also Cliff and Fiona for making us all pack lunches (everyone felt like one of the Goulding kids going off to primary school).

 Sandridge Carnival Vic

The Senior Carnival was on Sunday.  Conditions were reported as - Slight onshore wind from the south east, clouds with the occasional break. The swell was peaking at 6 inches on the shore break, just tricky enough to wet your knees and there was a lot of shells in the sand.  Perfect!  Although a core group of our competitors were missing some results of special interest were: Dave Sals finished 3rd open mens flags (some say he was going faster than when he was in the 80’s), Robyn Sals 6th open womens flags. Georgie Obrien 4th u17 iron. Brad Mitchell 1st u19 board.  Sven gave them a run for their money in the Ski.

The Boaties were also out in force for this carnival with a strong team effort. The 'reserve' crew rowed Open and finished about fourth overall - good speed, matched the open crews well.  Masters rowed in reserve grade, qualified for the final - strong use of the runs home.  U23s will be better for the hitout - finished third overall

U19s improved across their three races - won the final round, catching two crews on the way home.  Dean Lewsam swept his first races for HMB - great for the team to have Dean stepping up.

Ocean Thunder Report Dee Why Beach NSW (Sat)

Our Ocean Thunder Crew had the second round of the Ocean Thunder Series.

(It think you can catch it on one of those special pay TV stations)

Conditions 2 to 2.5 M swell & sucking on the bar.  By all reports not just a normal sucking a little on the bar, but real special super sucking “Extra Kurruwa Like” low tide water dredging across the bar.  Sounds fun.  The boys didn’t get too much water up their noses and rowed well.  The Sydney clubs had obviously done much more work in the conditions with all 6 boats in the mens final being NSW crews.

Results for our boys: 3rd,3rd,3rd,2nd,Smashed,4th

Well done to Pete, Jon, Adrian, Jim, Josh & James.
